Is Capitalism Good for the Poor?

This workshop analyzes empirical evidence to explore how capitalist institutions impact the well-being of the poor. It examines contexts such as communist China, Brazil’s rainforest frontier, democratic yet tradition-bound India, and nations experiencing civil strife in Africa. Drawing from the work of economic historian and Nobel Laureate Douglass North, the discussion focuses on the role of institutions—often referred to as the “rules of the game”—in shaping economic behavior and patterns of development.
